I see Stardust

Howdy. I haven’t posted the last couple days, sorry ‘bout that; I very cleverly managed to run out of internet at home and at uni simultaneously. And much drama ensued.

Yesterday, I went to see Stardust! Err, twice.

It was good enough the first time to make me want to see it again in short order, and I liked it even better the second time. Robert DeNiro was *awesome*, and I’m kind of in love with Charlie Cox, and all in all, it’s a funny, cute movie that y’all should go see.

(Paragraph has very low level *spoilers*) There were only two things from the book I missed, and it wasn’t the tree or the Lion/Unicorn battle. It was Yvaine’s very quiet profane reaction to being knocked out of the heavens, and the fact that Tristan didn’t free her from the silver chain willingly (if stupidly.) But if that’s the price to be paid for all the good new stuff, so be it.

If there’s any way of managing it, I prefer to go to the cinema alone. In spite or perhaps because of this, I love watching other movie-goers, and the people who saw Stardust were fascinating. The folk at the Regent in the morning were an interesting bunch (like the red-corseted girl who juggled plastic rings in the theatre waiting for the show to start, and *aww* the three generations of women from the same family who came along together,) but the people at Garden City in the evening were more fun. They were the ones who laughed in all the right places. Judging by both screenings, Stardust is the Gay Teen Date Movie of Choice (unless it has become the fashion for all teenage boys to wander around in pairs holding hands.) And you know how when you walk into a movie there might be a bunch of pensioners, or a bunch of twenty-something couples, or a bunch of teenagers in packs, or a bunch of families with kids? Stardust had no ‘or.’ Probably the most demographic-crossing movie crowd I’ve seen.

The trailers were cruddy (Fred Claus, Enchanted, something with the Rock) except the Golden Compass, which I’d be going to see even if the Fabulist didn’t say it was cool, and one of my favourite artists wasn’t doing conceptual work for it. I think I may pick up the books sometime between now and December, also.

I think I might go again next week sometime :)

Good Friday

Church at the somewhat unholy hour of eight a.m. this morning. I was yawning the whole way through -- I felt so bad. And I was in bed before 11 last night and everything.
300 was awesome, but what were y'all expecting?
It looks sooo much like a Frank Miller comic, even I can tell and all I've ever read of his is one Sin City book and The Dark Knight Returns. This movie has Frank Miller gore, Frank Miller wrinkles, Frank Miller nipples on Frank Miller women...
I'm glad I went last night, too. The atmosphere was awesome at the flicks - I went to the Southbank Cinema because they were showing it on the giant screen. It was a sell-out screening, and I nearly got trampled by people trying to get decent seats... the girl in front of me remarked to her friend, "I was here for the first day of Harry Potter. This is heaps more insane."
I got a decent seat because I showed up 40 minutes early and queued for one, so that was ok. I was disappointed by the trailers, just Disturbia, Shooter, and one other like that, then the new Pirates. But then they showed the trailer for Grindhouse, so they redeemed themselves somewhat.

I am not bad

I miss ONE DAY posting because I'm flat out finishing assignments and I get called a bad girl. Little sisters, I tell you. Anyway, have got it done on the wiki and in powerpoint format, and would upload it but i'm terrified of free file hosting sites. It's pretty cool if I do say so myself.
Saw The Prestige yesterday, and as my dad and I were saying, it's a bit of a downer, but it's a downer with style and good actors. And also saw Breakfast on Pluto. Cillian Murphy is excellent. Still, I don't know, I walked out of Batman Begins thinking, 'wow, I never knew the Scarecrow was so... pretty...'

let them eat cake

I made this cake and thought it looked so nice I should record it for posterity. It's chocolate, with chocolate icing and M&Ms mix-ups on top.

In other news, my science experiments are growing... These ones are cress.

I am consistently fascinated by this graffiti, at a train station in Brisbane. 'Water'... there's not much around at all, really. Then it gets me thinking about the train from Spirited Away, where the tracks are underwater... (I love that movie. It's my second favourite Ghibli film.)Not all graffiti is evil.

I'm reading C.S. Lewis' Surprised by Joy. It's not quite what I expected, but very good. And, my head nearly exploded with happiness yesterday when I realised what that Jars of Clay song I'm in the Way means. That one that goes

I'm in the way of fallin' down

I won't let you go that far now

Is talking about the fact that God literally stands between us and failure; that we can't be a Christian under our own power, but with Him, we can. At least, that's what I think it means. You never quite know with Jars.
